The first process in plaster carving was putting the plaster into a shape. My shape was determined by the juice carton. After a day of plaster sitting inside of the juice carton, it took the shape of the juice carton. I then began drawing out an abstract picture of a person. I decided to an abstract drawing of an strong man, whose heart pounces out from back of the head instead of toward the front of the chest. After drawing the sketch, I continued it by sketching it on the juice carton shaped plaster. I then began to carve on the front of my sketch, and continued around it.
The philosophy of plaster carving is achieving an abstract visual of a human form. It's three dimensional viewing brings forth a bit of realism. The emphasis of postive and negative space indicates the image round form. The creation of different levels in carving the plaster brings forth a type of realism.
