The first step in creating laminated wood carving is to cut a board into three similar pieces. After cutting out three pieces, I glued the pieces together with wood glue. In order to make sure they stuck together the class used a huge clamp. The next day, the three pieces of glue were stuck together and I was able to sketch my idea. I decided to a dread head with a a beanie. After sketching my idea, I drew my sketch on the wood. The hardest part was wrapping my sketch around three pieces of wood. I began carving after I finished drawing my sketch on the boards. After carving I sanded my board and painted the beanie the Jamaican flag colors. I then stained the face of my person with dreads. When I brought my wood home, I realized I wanted to make the dreads pop out and look realistic. So I bought some black yarn and began to round them like dreads and keep the yarn together on the wood with hot glue.
The philosophy of laminated wood carving is using a chisel and mallet to carve a wooden figure. The style of art is creating a realistic or abstract figure by using tools to create various details. Using decorative cuts by deep gouges really brings out the shape of the figure. The technique of using different knives and chisels for the curves and maintaing the edges help in creating a figure. These techniques can also help define lines and angles of the figure.
